Next Meeting

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, October 6th at 6:00 pm, at the Aliso Viejo Library. Go to Membership/Meetings for location map.

We are privileged to have Laura Hoffman join us for our October 6th meeting. Her presentation topic will be Composition and Design, to help photographers of every level design and take great photographs every time. What makes an image stand out from the rest? We will explore what makes a photograph not only a keeper, but a winner!

She will also be leading our critique session in the second half of our meeting. This promises to be extremely informative and helpful. We will look at our images from the prior months outings and challenges to determine what we can do to get to the next level.

Laura D. Hoffman has a Bachelor of Studio Arts degree from California State University Fullerton and holds two full-time teaching credentials in Career and Technical Education and Adult Education. She is currently at work on her Master's degree in art with a concentration on illustration.

She is a digital photography instructor at Saddleback Valley Unified School District Adult Education. Her current lineup of classes can be seen here. She can be reached for projects at xinacat@yahoo.com.

We will also have our regular feature, Photographer of the Month.

We are now using our website galleries exclusively.  Look on the gallery tab for this month’s galleries and upload your images directly to the site.  Be sure to include your name in your image title.  Check the site for sizing instructions.  And of course you are always welcome to bring prints to display.

The meeting is free and open to the general public. See you there!!

August 2010 Photographer of the Month PDF Print E-mail

And the August Photographer of the Month is . . .

Phil Olson!    Congratulations!!

alt

I have been passionate about photography since high school. Many people may not remember them, but I actually saved S&H green stamps to buy my FIRST camera - a Brownie 20.  I distinctly remember taking my first photography class in college. I used a twin lens reflex Yashica-Mat EM. It was the first time I processed film myself and I had no idea that I was supposed to be in the dark room (no light).  I opened the film in the lab and loaded what I had shot for the week’s class and processed it.  I was shocked when none of the photos came out. It was not fun!

Next, I went on an all expenses paid tour on Southeast Asia for the government for about two years. It was an experience that allowed me to learn how to shoot many different things. But the most fun I had during that two years was shooting my new Asahi Pentax Spotmatic SLR (and I had someone other then myself do the processing!).

It wasn’t until later in life that I discovered digital photography. And I decided it was time for and upgrade from film to a digital IE Minolta DiMAGE 7i. Buying a digital camera however, did change my approach to photography. I still shoot like I’m just shooting film snapshots. It has been years now since I restarted my photography hobby. I have graduated to a Canon DSLR shooting most of the time full manual, RAW.  I really love shooting architecture and structures, but I have also learned that if I want this hobby pay me, I need to shoot people as well. And once again, I’m discovering and learning new things about photography. I just finished shooting my first wedding and it was a truly rewarding experience.

How to submit photos PDF Print E-mail

In the past, we have waited until the actual meeting to turn in photos to Eddie for viewing that same evening. This has caused delays and is of course not the best use of meeting time. In the future, let's turn in our pictures prior to the meeting via email attachments to Eddie.

For viewing using the projector, please size your photos to be 1024 pixels on the long side or a little larger, definitely not smaller because the projector cannot make them bigger. Really large ones are ok if you don't have the means to resize. Our projector has a maximum resolution of 1024 px so they would be reduced automatically...again, it can reduce but it can't enlarge.

For easy identification, please rename your files to include the topic and your name, for example: sunset_georgew-01.jpg. Remember, topic first, then your name. Begin by clicking here, then just attach your files.

Oh, for photos that will be displayed on the website, please resize them to be 540 pixels or smaller on the long side. Again if you don't know how to do this, we can do that for you but it requires extra processing.

Keep shooting and send us lots of photos.

July 2010 Photographer of the Month PDF Print E-mail

Congratulations!

The July 2010 Photographer of the Month is . . .

Steve Coburn

My first experience with photography that I can remember was when I was about 10 and my dad gave me and my brothers a camera to use on a vacation trip we took to Florida. My brothers and I all fought for camera time and when I got the camera in my hands I knew I was hooked.

My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic 110 which had very poor images quality, but it wasn’t about the quality at that time, it was about the excitement.

In 1994 I started taking architectural photos for a paint company which gave me an opportunity to learn Photoshop. I upgraded to a Nikon EM 35mm body with a 50mm f1.8 Nikkor lens and added a Sigma 75-250mm f4 lens which I still use from time to time.

Today my photography is purely emotionally driven; it is a way to express my emotions and feelings. Photography is an outlet of what I feel and see. I strive to capture simple vibrant colors that tell a story in my own slightly obscured views of this magnificent world. My passion for photography has opened my eyes to a new world that I have only begun to explore.

There is a colorful world out there and I plan to capture it.

Friday, November 5 to Sunday, November 7   Zion National Park

http://www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm

We’ll be soon getting hotel and camping info listed so you can make your reservations.

Saturday, November 20  Lummis Home and Heritage Square Museum and SouthWest Museum

Charles Lummis was sort of a John Muir of the Southwest. Hired by the Los Angeles Times over 100 years ago, he walked from Ohio to Los Angeles, reporting along the way. A friend of Theodore Roosevelt, he built this house out of local stones with walls so thick it has withstood numerous earthquakes in the last 100 years. Open on weekends at noon; combine your visit with the nearby Southwest Museum founded by Lummis, and Heritage Square (unrelated to Lummis) where historic houses from the area have been moved and are slowly being restored.

Death Valley trip

November 2010, date TBA

The event/ trip committee is planning a trip to Death Valley in November, 2010. I'd like to get an approximate number of how many people think they'll attend and how many rooms they will need. The rooms we request will most likely have 2 queen size beds and cost about $120 a night per room, not per person.

If we have enough people, maybe we can hire a bus.

Openings won't last long, so contact Myra as soon as possible to reserve yours today!
